Hi Matt!
I just want to let everyone know that the Sci-Spy: The Complete Series TPB came out today (12/8/2010). Image Comics put a nice package together with good quality paper & Gulacy covers on the front & back. Paul's covers were taken from the cover art to issues # 1 & 2 of the original series. The glossy paper in the TPB really makes the art and colors shine. The paper quality is the same as that of the James Bond: Serpent's Tooth series. The only thing that might have made this collection better was if they had Paul or Doug write an introduction with their thoughts & comments about the series. Dave |

A word from Paul :
A Last Really Late Take On Comicon-
Hi everybody. My thoughts on this last Comicon experience left me wondering where and what this show is to become in the future after reading the president of Comicon's column in the program booklet it sounds very likely that San Diego may lose this juggernaut convention to Los Angeles as soon as next year.Anahiem was also mentioned. Can these cities actually accommodate 15 0,000 people in need of food and lodging? Another point could be the catering to the TV anf film industry which is becoming more and more a very prevalent aspect of this show. On the other hand, the convenience of keeping it in the L.A. area would make sense. In my opinion, the ideal venue and to strike a balance would be to throw it in Las Vegas. They would embrace Comicon with neon open arms. Less crowded and more space to move around. You would get an even bigger draw with more deals for the folks coming in from the east coast and overseas. Anyhoo, my wife Nanci and I arrived on Friday morning and left Sunday evening. On Saturday i finally put the names with the faces of the folks of the Radical Publishing staff that I've been working with for the past eight months. Jimmy Palmiotti and I signed Time Bomb and handed out posters. I'm enjoying working for this group. A good crowd on hand greeting us. Lots of interviews. Later in the day, Nanci and I strolled the city and took in some much needed downtime by our hotel pool. In the evening we hooked up with Jimmy, Amanda, and a gang from Radical at the Hard Rock Hotel where we joined the Ain't It Cool News head geek Harry Knowles for drinks. Later, Tim Bradstreet, David Mack and a bunch of nuts I've known for years gathered up on the jam packed roof bar. The late bicycle taxi rid back to our hotel in heavy traffic was pretty trippy to put it mildly. Sunday was a lot of "Where am I?" at the con. Signing again with Jimmy at Radical. A highlight was meeting Ben Roberts-Vice President and head of development at Gale Ellen Hurd's company Valhalla. Something is brewing. It's early, It's exciting and I'll just say it in three words without jinxing anythi ng-Six From Sirius. Lastly, at the airport, we ran into good friend and head Dark Horse honcho Mike Richardson. He was heading north, we were heading south. He managed to blurt out that they are doing another Crimson Empire book and invited me to do the art. Two days ago we wrapped up a deal over the phone and it looks like that's my next project after I finish up Time Bomb. I'll be doing pencils and inks on this one. Im going to need the Force to get through this one. Take care, Paul |

Hi Matt!
2 pieces of Gulacy news this time. 1) The Captain Action TPB titled "Captain Action: A Call to Action" (which collects issues # 0-5) has been canceled by the publisher due to low orders. Paul's cover to issue # 5 of Captain Action (with variant colors) would have been used as the cover to this TPB. Previews reported this cancellation this month. 2) An Italian HC which collects the 3 "Batman Versus Predator" miniseries was published in 2008 and it features a previously unused Gulacy cover (see attached scan). This artwork was previously used as the cover to Previews Vol. 4, # 8 in August 1994 and as a pin-up page in the Batman versus Predator II: Bloodmatch TPB. This year, the Spanish edition HC of this book has been released with the same cover & the title listed as "Batman Versus Depredador" (see additional scan). Both books are published by Planeta DeAgostini, a foreign imprint for DC and Dark Horse Comics.

Time Bomb interview with Justin Grey, Jimmy Palmiotti and Paul.
Last year, when the project was announced, the artist for the project had yet to be found. What led to Paul coming onboard? You all having worked together on a few issues of Jonah Hex?
JIMMY : it was as simple as asking… I’m sure there was much more to it at Radical and getting Paul’s schedule to work. PAUL : I actually came across an article about Time Bomb on the Radical website (www.radicalpublishing.com). I thought the original cover mock up was pretty striking. I assumed that the book was already in progress or completed with another artist. I can't recall who contacted who in regards to Time Bomb, but right then I was simultaneously contacted by Axel Alonso's assistant editor for what he termed, "A special Cable project" at Marvel. The three oversized Time Bomb books sounded sweeter along with the storyline that Jimmy described to me. Plus the element of sci-fi captured my attention along with the great cast of heroes. (Jimmy and Justin) How does the secret Nazi city get discovered? JIMMY : The city below Berlin was discovered by accident while they were drilling a new tunnel for the subway there. They had a collapse below them and further investigation led to the discovery. (Jimmy and Justin) Where did the idea for the Omega Bomb come from, since, you know, it’s not like it’s based on historic fact? JIMMY : From the Beneath the Planet of the Apes movie…the last scene, where Chuck Heston is dooming the planet. We were trying to come up with a name for the type of world ender missile that would work and it was out there all the time. Hey, for the record, the first two Planet of the Apes are my favorite. What can you tell us about the main players of the book, i.e. the team going back in time? Are they a military unit used to going on missions? JIMMY : They are military and secret service as well as having a scientist in the group. They were selected as the most well rounded agents to deal with just about anything…and in this case it was a good thing they were. Only two of the characters have worked together before…and that’s because they were once married. What kind of modern equipment are they taking back with them through the time stream? JIMMY : The usual weapons and some sci-fi cutting edge stuff that we introduce in the third issue. We really didn’t want a huge contrast in tech… but when it happens, its worlds away from each other. PAUL : They're all using state of the art weaponry that is used in the global military today. No pulse rifles or photon torpedoes. The only outlandish device is the time machine. Where does it all go wrong, really, that the team ends up in the wrong time period? JIMMY : It goes wrong right away because they were only suppose to be sent back maybe a month or a year, but the experimental nature of the Time Bomb experiment… well… anything could go wrong. It was not a well worked out machine. Are comics ready for yet another World War II story? I mean, you really need a good twist to get people interested in Nazis anymore – they’ve been used one time too many as the ‘obvious’ bad guys. JIMMY : Are comics ready for another 400 superhero books coming out this month? Well… they are, so having one time traveling, Nazi war, sci-fi drama out there should be a good thing. The mash up of genres will really make a lot of people happy I think. There is really something here for everyone. PAUL : I've been wanting to do a WWII story forever. A couple of years back I pitched a really cool script written by Bob Burden to Tom Brevoort at Marvel that involved Captain America, Nick Fury and the Red Skull. It took place in 1945 China. I thought they'd jump all over it but I was told they already had an inventory of World War II stuff. The only comic I saw was Billy Tucci's Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion which I thought was awesome. Everything has been used too many times as bad guys [laughter]. What's new out there? Trends come and go. Quentin Tarantino didn't have a problem using Nazis. Everything boils down to a great storyline. When Jimmy described Time Bomb to me with the sci-fi twist it was like, "Sign me up!" It's a refreshing take and very entertaining new twist on an old genre. A terrific yarn with a great cast and to my knowledge I've never seen or read anything like it. Are you a sucker for World War II stories, films, documentaries, etc.? JIMMY : All wars really…especially WWII because my dad and his brothers fought in it. I am interested in all history. I find it completely fascinating and amazing how human beings keep making the same stupid mistakes over and over again. PAUL : When I was a kid, I grew up on TV shows like Combat, Rat Patrol and if you like World War II with a humorous twist, Hogan's Heroes. Plus everybody on the block played army. I couldn’t get enough of Sgt. Rock. I subscribed to it. I have some historic knowledge of that war but not thorough. My dad served in the navy back then. He was part of a team that helped clean up after the Pearl Harbor attack. I'm pretty geeked up on ordering the Nazi DVD series that was shown on the History Channel. It was a very bizarre and compelling event in human history. Unbelievable that anything like that actually took place. We reveal a lot of that in Time Bomb. |

Hi Matt!
Captain Action trading cards are being released in July 2010 by Moonstone Books & Captain Action Enterprises and guess who contibuted... Paul of course. In the ad for the trading cards, you'll notice Card # 36 which includes Paul's cover to Lady Action # 1. It is likely that Paul's two Captain Action covers (# 0 and # 5) will also be included in these trading cards, although I don't know this for sure. The complete set is scheduled to include 50 cards. See the upcoming May issue of Previews for the solicitation ad. Also, last year, Moonstone Books & 5Finity Productions released the Moonstone Maximum Sketch Card Series. Over 100 artists contributed to the various sketch cards that were included in assorted packs of cards. Paul's original art card was of Captain Action and it was listed as a Maximum Rare card which means there was only 1 card done by Paul & signed by him, which was included in a random pack. That will be one lucky fan I'm also looking forward to May 1st and Free Comic Book Day when Radical Publishing will be giving away their Radical: Bigger Books! Bigger Value! FCBD comic which will include an 8-page preview of Paul's Time Bomb comic series. Time Bomb # 1 is not due out until September 2010. Dave |

Hi Matt!
It's out! The Black Widow: Web of Intrigue HC book came out today (3/24/2010)! Not only does it reprint Paul's great Black Widow story from Bizarre Adventures magazine # 25 from 1981, but it also includes an enlarged version of Paul's COLOR art from the cover of that original magazine on the back cover of the dust jacket on the STANDARD edition only. It's very cool. This reprinted art was edited to only include the Black Widow elements of Paul's Bizarre Adventures cover. The reprint story inside is presented in the original format of b&w. The Variant Edition of this book includes only a small version of Paul's entire cover to Bizarre Adventures # 25 on the back dust jacket cover. This book (the Standard edition version) is on sale from amazon.com for $16.49. A scan of the front cover is attached. Dave |

Paul's unused pin-up art of Elric of Melnibone was included in Alter Ego # 92 which featured Part 3 of their focus on Sword & Sorcery comics. This magazine came out today March 10th. The editor Roy Thomas apparently owns this piece of original art which he considers "a prize from his personal collection", according to the caption in this fanzine. Gulacy's Elric drawing was previously printed in Comic Book Atist # 7 in February of 2000 & subsequently in the Comic Book Artist Collection Volume 3 in April of 2005. A large version of this illustration was also included in Steranko's Mediascene # 23 in 1978. Dave |

Hi Matt!
After contacting Paul today, he mentioned that he is not doing the art for Cable # 24, as the Previews guide and DC Comics website has indicated. Instead, he has been hard at work on "Time Bomb" for Radical Publishing. Paul thinks that DC may have been intending for him to do that issue, but that by the time they contacted him about it, he was already underway with the Time Bomb project. A word from Paul :
Greetings one and all and a happy belated New Year.
Let me jump right in and get to the point because I can't stand small talk. First, those of you who have'nt seen Avatar, grab your coat and head out the door. Now. NEWS : - Look for another "Art Of" book coming out this year through Desperado/IDW. Anything that did'nt make it in the first book will be showcased in this new edition. Some things you've seen before plus many unpublished pieces. Also from these same folks is a re-issue of the classic horror story from Warren Publishing - Blood On Black Satin. - My wife and I were joined by by fellow comic creators J.G.Jones, Ernie Chan and Jesus' Redondo at the Malaga, Spain comicfest back in September '09. A wonderful time had by all. Plenty of food. drink and merriment. This being my fourth visit there as a guest, the hosts and fans are some of the best and never let you down. The downside if any was me getting clobbered by the European version of the H1N1 flu. I was horizontal in bed for two and a half days. Eventually I recovered and the show went on. You just have to fight it. OTHER NEWS : - Also in '09, the Portland Wonder Woman Day '09 was a sensation. I finally got to meet the Hernandez brothers whom work I have been a huge fan of for many years. Awesome time for a great cause. Props to hosts Andy Mangels and Stacy Korn. A highlight last year I need to mention. MY PROJECTS : - FROM MARVEL : In the new Wolverine/Wendigo comic soon to hit the stands this month, look for a surprise appearance from a guy who's an inker and a writer with the initials J.P. - FROM DYNAMIC FORCES : Writer Doug Moench and I are really happy to announce that SCI SPY will finally become a trade this year. A book that we feel demands a spot light. SCI SPY was actually being seriuosly looked at a few years back by James Cameron while he was developing Avatar. How do we know this? Our friend and comic enthusiast Tom Cohen happened to be Cameron's right hand script consultant at Lightstorm at the time. A division of Warner Brothers who were behind the Harry Potter films also expressed great interest last year. We need those eyes for God's sake. Hello? It's right here, folks. - FROM RADICAL : As I write this, I'm on the thirty-third page of TIME BOMB published by RADICAL with a long way to go. Already there is a buzz on this book and there should be. Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti came up with a great one. You can't beat special forces agents going back in time to fight Nazis. I'm pencilling and inking but I have my friend and wing man Charles Yoakum pitching in. Marvel heavy hitter Rain Berado will handle all colors. I want to be able to post up samples on this site but Radical has very strict policies in this regard but they are negotiable under some circumstances. I'll give it the old college try. - FROM D.C.COMICS: : After a two year hiatus with only one issue of Jonah Hex I made contact with head honcho Dan Didio over the holidays. A very amicable chat and handshake via the internet with mutual plans to do something exciting again this year. I am looking forward to that. That's it folks, by golly. The usual huge thanks to webmaster Matt and contributers Dave and Renaud who make this site snap, crackle and pop a little better. A heartfelt warm, happy, and prosperous new year to each and every one of you and thanks as always for your attention and support. Peace, Paul |

[Yesterday] Hi Matt! Has anyone seen this? It's a Vampirella Resin Model Kit (Vampi is 8½" high) which was sculpted by Raven Hood, based on Paul Gulacy’s cover art from Vampirella Magazine # 85 (from March 1980). I have no idea what year this was produced in, although it appears to have been fairly recent. See attached scan & you'll recognize Paul's influence. Does anyone have any more info on this? Dave |
||
[Today] Hi Matt! I couldn't find an image of the packaging to the Vampi statue. I actually found the scan of the statue on the internet. It may be that this item was produced in 1994 & that it retailed for $34.95, based on some references I found to it on the web. I'm attaching some additional scans & 1 scan has a date that it was built by a fan on in 1995. Dave |
