A word from Paul :

Star Wars Art : Comics

If you are a hardcore Star Wars enthusiast this rare limited edition book is on the top of the list for you. If you saw the Star Wars Art:Visions that was published last year, this is the follow-up. First of all I almost fell over when I was contacted to participate. In a nutshell, the book utilizes two pages from Crimson Empire One and a new commissioned painting. To say I had a tough time coming up with an idea is an understatement. This is Lucas and now I'm lo sing sleep. Not to mention I had'nt picked up the brushes in twelve years. One idea that came was with Lando in a wild nightclub with two girls on his arms.

The other was a pensive profile shot of Peter Cushing with Darth Vader and Palpatine breathing down his neck in the background. Then i thought of Indy and "the Boulder". From that point on I began to receive those elusive visions. Executive Editor Jonathan Rinzler was my contact guy at LucasBooks. I tried to explain the idea via e-mail but he could'nt picture it so he asked me to send a sketch in a scan .A day later he wrote back that he actually ran into George in the hallway and showed him my idea. Lucas gave it the thumbs up and it was on. No time for worry, fear or doubt. I had to dive in.

The coffee table size book contains almost all of the older and new artists that worked on Star Wars comics thru the years through Marvel and Dark Horse Comics. Al Williamson, Howard Chaykin, Frank Miller, Steranko, Ron Frenz and Amanda Conner just to name a few with a foreword by Denny O'neil.

Dave "TheBest" Lemieux's last mail :

Bonjour Matt-

Today, Volume 7 of the Thunder Agents Archives HC (see attached cover) was released by DC Comics and it included a reprint of Paul's 27-page Thunder Agents story from Omni Comix magazine # 3. The quality of the reproduction was quite good. The price is expensive, however, at $59.99, although it is available from Amazon.com for 39% less. Now, if only DC would publish the last 2 chapters of that story. Remember, Omni Comix was canceled after issue # 3 back in 1995, so the final 2 chapters of Paul's story never appeared. It was reported, however, that they were completed. A 5-page prelude to the story (by Gulacy & Terry Austin) was published in the Thunder Agents Companion in 2005 by Twomorrows Publishing in b&w. That 5-page story had originally been intended for a Thunder Agents # 0 comic, back in 1995, which ne ver saw print.

Bonjour Matt-

As you may recall, Paul completed a cover for the Savage Beauty comic series. Well, after the 1st issue was published, Moonstone canceled the series. Now, Moonstone is planning a Limited Edition HC book which will include Savage Beauty # 1 and the unpublished # 2 and # 3 issues. The book is scheduled to come out in September of 2011 and will feature the Paul Gulacy cover (see attached). All I can say is, "Gulacy does it again." The book will be 70 pages and will sell for $29.99.

Michael T.Gilbert, David Chelsea, Paul and Mike Richardson kick off the celebration of the new Dark Horse Presents comic at the Portland, Oregon comic shop Things From Another World on April 21 to a packed room.

04/18/11

A word from Paul :

Hi everybody,

Long time no speaks. Hey, I don't tweet but if I did---"Just saw a fly walk across the rug. Here's a pic of me and my cousin Bernie walking in downtown Cleveland. Hey, is it me or is Janet Jackson trying to look like Mike?"

Okay, in case any of you don't know, this site run out of France by a guy named Matt Bortlolin. He does it as a friend and I'm very fortunate and grateful. He's my overseas buddy. Dude does'nt even charge me a dime. All I have to do is mail him an occasional video game that he's after and it's all good. You gotta give it up to Matt. Plus he named his son after me! How cool is that? One day I have to return to France. Particularly Paris, the greatest city I've had the pleasure of visiting in my travels and drop in on Matt and family. I have to do this. Matt and I go back something like eighteen years.

My phone rings the other day and it's my pal Steve Rude. I say hello. He says "Big G" [he calls me that and of course he is known as The Dude] "I want you to meet someone on the phone here." Drew, meet Paul Gulacy. Big G meet Drew Struzan". That was f....ing awesome. We chatted for about ten minutes. I'm totally a hu ge fan. One of the last great American illustrators. He just slays. I had the opportunity to see his originals at a small gallery years ago when I first moved to Portland, Oregon. A three way phone call via Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland.

Speaking of crazy phone calls. A couple of months ago the phone rings one day and my caller I.D. reads Paramount Pictures. A woman representing J.J.Abrams wants to know if I have any artwork that resembles a kung fu movie poster from the 70s.We are both on my site searching and coming up with nothing that isn’t licensed by some company. They wanted it for a scene in his new film Super 8 where the camera pans across a young boy's bedroom from that era. No dice. I got nothin'. That's how it goes sometimes. They need something fast and I couldn’t deliver. Here's me, the kung fu guy with nothing. The upshot--they knew of my work. That made the day a little better.

On a better note I get a phone call one day from a fellow named Jonathan Rinzler who works for Lucasfilms as the art director on current Star Wars line of books. There was a gorgeous called Visions that came out last year which contained work from master painters from around the globe. Check it out. This time Lucasbooks was looking for artists for a book done by comic book artists. George's love for comics goes way back with Steranko being one of inspirations. Candidates were hand picked an I was lucky to get in there. Jonathan asked me what medium I was going to use and I told him I would do a large painting. Bear in mind, this is Lucas. If they felt the art was not up to snuff you don't get in. Here was the snag. I hadn’t picked up the paint brushes for twelve years. On top of that I was drawing a blank as far as an idea goes and now I'm losing sleep. I hyper focused on something with Lando Calrission but nada. I found out that the idea I did have was alre ady done an amateur film makers here in Portland. Luckily a vision materialized. When and where it came from I can't recall but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was while I was driving my car, taking a shower or walking through a grocery store. I pitched the idea to Jonathan but now he was having trouble picturing it so he now asks me to submit a rough sketch. A week later he calls me and says he loved the idea and actually ran into George in the hallway and he gave it the thumbs up.

All of a sudden my painting ability came roaring back. It was swimming. It took about two and a half weeks to complete and as far as I know it'll be in the book.

If someone told me at the time that the first Star Wars movie came out that one day I would be tied somehow to that world I would think they lost it. Fast forward and now I'm walking room to room in a children's hospital with Mark Hamill giving away Crimson Empire comics from a little red wagon we pulled. The whole thing is freaky. Now twelve years later I’m in the midst of Crimson Empire Three with Mike Richardson and Randy Stradley. That said, there is going to be a big difference. I honestly cringe when I look at the earlier books. With all due respect, Craig Russell was the wrong choice for inker. Randy Emberlin was nothing short of a disaster. I also recall being told that not all of the colors were done by Dave Stewart. There was a ghost colorist in there. Oddly enough it was the most fan mail I ever received from all over the world with strangely the majority of the letters wanting the empire to win but that's another story. This time things will be different. I will handle the inks. We have a great colorist from the Philipines who rocks. The script from what I've gathered is rock solid. It's "movies on paper" time,Jedis. I'm studying the films attempting to capture the flavor.

I picked the box sets of all six films and you are down with these movies, you have to check out the special features. If you ever wondered what it was like to see Lucas and company in action you'll see it here. Jar Jar Binks and Vador's"Noooooooo..!" aside the prequels in my opinion were phenomenal. Breathtaking camera work, art direction and design. When it comes to sci fi films, Lucas owns it. Nobody comes close. Just when you think you've seen everything on how these films were made another army of people on gigantic soundstages appear.

That's it folks. til next time, stay tuned.

    Peace,

    Paul

P.S. In regards to conventions, Nanci and I will be attending the Anaheim con April 29th, 30th and the first of May and Miami Supercon July 1st to the 4th.Hope to see ya there!

And here's a mail by Tony :

    Hi,

I was wondering, do you know for sure that the Time Bomb trade is in US comic shops

Amazon is no longer offering it directly for sale from them, only thru second hand sellers.
I pre-ordered 3 copies from Amazon over a month ago and they say my order cannot be filled at this point.

I might have to go to a few comic shops now and find copies for me and 2 co-workers.

    Big Gulacy Fan,
    Tony

Someone can answer Tony's question? This side of the ocean , I cannot see right into the US comic shops!

MARVEL COMICS IN THE 1970S SC
    (W) Pierre Comtois

TwoMorrows Publishing presents Marvel Comics in the 1970s, the sequel to Pierre Comtois’ heralded first volume on the 1960s! This full decade of pop-culture history saw Stan Lee’s role as writer diminish as he ascended to Publisher, the departure of Jack Kirby to DC (and his later return to Marvel), the rise of Roy Thomas as editor (and eventual Editor In Chief), and the introduction of a new wave of writers and artists who would expand the boundaries of comics beyond super-heroes. Comics such as the Spider-Man “drug” issues, Conan the Barbarian, Tomb of Dracula, Doug Moench & Paul Gulacy's Master of Kung Fu, Howard the Duck, the new X-Men, and more are covered in detail, along with the creators who wrote and drew them.

Hi Matt!

Based on information from the lastest issue of Previews along with CBR news featuring Mike Richardson's comments at http://boards.theforce.net/literature/b10003/31474419/p1/, it now appears that the 8 page Crimson Empire III Prologue which was done by Paul (& written by Randy Stradley) will appear in the new Dark Horse Presents # 1 which is an 80 page comic due out on April 20, 2011. According to Richardson, this prologue is a new story & recap of the previous 2 Crimson Empire series which will provide a lead-in to the 3rd and final part of the Crimson Empire trilogy.
