Hi folks.     Thought I'd say a few words about Comicpalooza 2014. Man, when they say everything is big in Texas, man, they 're not kiddin'.     Let's start here : how about Houston being the third largest city in the U.S.? Who knew? Great venue off of the brand new Hilton Hotel with 30,000 strong coming through adjacent convention center the doors. Inside Aaron Lopresti sitting to my left, to my right Jaunty Jim Steranko, to his right the legendary Neal Adams. Whoa!     In the Green Room it wasn’t unusual to spot Stan having a sandwich, Nichelle Nichols nibbling on a salad or David Spurlock slugging back his fourth beer. Truely a show to reckon with and up there with the best.     Also, and lastly, huge props to J.R.Riley who navigated this monster and made it a great success not to mention the beginning of a wonderful friendship                     Paul

Hard Rider : A Rarity!     When I first walked away from the world of comics my huge desire was to follow in the steps of Jim Steranko and my peers such as Barry Smith and Howard Chaykin and enter the very competitive world of paper back cover illustration. Ina nutshell I was getting nowhere, I lacked the patience and in a nutshell walked away and entered the world of advertising in New York City     However! Back in 1981 I did sell one-a western, but the company went out of business and was bought out apparently by Tower Books. I never retrieved the original. Back then it was nearly impossible to retrieve the original. It would not be unusual for the companies to hoard the artwork in warehouses or even go so far as to destroying it. There are horrific stories of the Mcginnis and Frazetta estates going though these nifgtmares.     I spent countless hours scrounging through used book stores trying to track down this elusive book, Anyhow, flash back four years ago - I'm talking to my old pal Dan Adkins on the telephone. He informs me he was at a yard sale and spotted the paperback. It existed! I asked him if he picked it up for me and he said no. AHHHHHH!     Now in the meanwhile Dynamite Dave Lemieux - a big contributer to the site recently came across the book on Amazon - now I own three of these damn things. Yay.     The quest is over. The elusive book called Hard Rider!                     Paul

What's up, everybody? A rock solid good time at Wondercon in Anaheim. California last week. May I echo the very words of my wife Nanci. The photos speak for themselves. Next up is Comicpalooza in Houson, Texas May 23-26 Memorial DaY weekend. Hope to see ya there!                     Paul Hi Everyone! I would like to take the time to say from Paul and I that we were treated like a King and Queen thanks to the wonderful Janet Goggins! She took care of everything, she is so organized and professional. It was one of the best cons we have ever attended, this was all made possible by her taking care of her guests! We would love to come back anytime. Her staff was very professional always coming around and asking if we needed something or if we needed someone to stay at our table while Paul did a panel or a break. We would like to give a shout out to her staff, Steve Lord and Alex Gamboa for being so attentive and taking care of us. Thanks to all of you for making our visit so fun and exciting!                     Nanci

Hey check this oldie but a goodie dug up by our website pal and contributer Dave Lemieux.     Sadly, some jackass moron at Warren Publishing thought it would be a great idea to run the cover but totally eliminate the background artwork so you only see the Rook figure and the robot!     And let's not forget a 20 page Rook story that I drew but was never published that of course vanished.     Can anyone say the Titanic?

The Art of Vampirella: The Warren Years HC book was just published by Dynamite Entertainment and it includes a high quality reproduction of Paul Gulacy's art for the cover of Vampirella Magazine # 85 along with extensive comments by Paul regarding his creation of the cover and his other work for Warren Publishing at that time. It is a very well produced book with some dazzling artwork. Attached are scans of the cover of this book & of Paul's cover to Vampirella Magazine # 85 (from 1980). The actual reproduction of Paul's painting in this book does not include the cover copy or logo of the magazine, but just the painting itself.                 Dave

From the archives......     I just discovered something very rare in 2 Mexican Kung Fu comic magazines from 1974....a COLOR version of Paul's Shang-Chi story "Web of Bleeding Vipers" from Deadly Hands of Kung Fu magazine # 3.     I have attached some scans of the covers to Kung Fu Special Edition # 4 & 5 which feature in 2 parts the Shang-Chi story which had only previously been published in black and white. I also have included a scan of pages 10 & 11 of that story in full "COLOR".     I always wondered what that story would look like if it were published in color. Now I know & it's great. These comics are of magazine size (8.5" x 11"). Issue # 4 contains Pages 1-8 of the story & issue # 5 contains Pages 9-15. Enjoy!                 Dave

Recently, my wife Nanci and I have begun some early remodeling in our home. While moving things around in my studio which resembles Dresden after the bombing I happened to come across some rare items I thought were long gone and in the city dump somewhere. A whole menagerie of items in copy form that normally would land in the wastebasket. Many mock ups and conceptual ideas for comic covers, illustrations and character designs. For aspiring artists this may give you a glimpse of what is shown to editors prior to be given the green light to the finished product. Many of you who follow my work will recognize some of these right off the bat. While I'm at it, for all of the folks pestering me to join Twitter and Facebook, all I can say is give me time. Frankly, the lack of time is what keeps me from taking the plunge but I'll work on it. I can't wait to tell you my pet's name, what movie I love, my favorite color, and pics of our vacation in Cleveland. Hey, speaking of travelin ; by all means if you happen to be attending the Anaheim, Houston or London conventions, please do by all means drop by the table and say hey.     And while I'm at it, I want to give huge props to the fellows who make this site rock a little better with their contributions and that would be Jep and Dani Soto across the pond in Spain and my man Renauld Lefebvre up north in Quebec, Canada. And while I'm at it again, I want to make the announcement that later this month I'll be joining forces once again with my old art dealer Spencer Beck at The Artist's Choice later this month.
